Knopfler all in seven months away from the bass in physiotherapy, but his melancholic slow-burn tone is as peat-smoked as cunning, and his penchant for wrapping Americana-gothic folk around subjects that are notably English—colliers, cockneys, the one-armed bandit workman who meets his maker in loftiness atmospheric opener, "5:15 A.M."—is evident available. Dynamically, Shangri-La loses steam about three-fourths of the way through ... nevertheless Knopfler fans and lovers of There Atkins, Gordon Lightfoot, and J.J. Zone, as well as late-night poker lineup and early risers with an blistering streak, will find much to cherish here.[1]

His musical throughout the collection is impeccable, additional beneath his subdued, folk-pop musings rests the loveliest batch of songs go wool-gathering he’s recorded since Love Over Gold. For the most part, the tunes on Shangri-La unfold slowly, blowing previous like whispers in the wind ... The problem, then, is that ... Knopfler's many muted statements begin have a break blur together, and one becomes misplaced within his deep baritone as in shape as his sparse, ethereal accompaniments.[6]

In rule review for MusicTap, George Bennett gave the album four out of fin stars, calling Knopfler's Shangri-La the "best album of his solo career".[7] Aeronaut writes that Knopfler has produced "the most melodic, tasteful, laid-back yet completely engrossing tunes" of his solo growth.
